Après un dernier opus en 1996, Spiritchaser, le groupe britannico-australien se sépare et Brendan Perry se consacre à sa carrière solo tandis que Lisa Gerrard contribuera à un grand nombre de bandes originales de films tels que Heat de Michael Mann et Gladiator de Ridley Scott. Les retrouvailles se feront en 2005 pour une tournée mondiale qui assoit le succès et l'influence du groupe. Conscient de l'alchimie musicale qui entoure leurs titres, ils décident de retourner en studio et composent ce premier album en 16 ans.
